2023, charcoal on baking paper

In this installation the lengths of papers cut across the space, each line of paper touching and affecting each other. After covering one side of the paper with charcoal, I noticed the incidental marks made on the reverse of the paper when two pieces lay on top of each other, or one folds back on itself to touch the other side. I am interested in how materials themselves can perform drawing actions and material combinations that can DO something; how charcoal transfers from one surface to another.

Dripping Slipping is inspired by the action of mud falling down cliffs on the Yorkshire Coast. This slippage continues in the gestural action of material on the paper and the accumulation of charcoal on its surface. I aim to draw in collaboration with material, exploring the transformative interactions of photographic paper with light, drawing matter and time. I am interested in paying attention to drawing as gesture and action, to its physical substance and the quality of materials.

Dripping Slipping was shortlisted for the 2022 Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize.

Lines of longitude and latitude are abstracted in the fragmented globe projections used to construct the drawings. Influenced by mapping systems, and the collision between representations of space and our physical perception of it.
